Once upon a time...
Siblings.
What makes our bond exceptionally different from others? Watching Disney movies, waiting for the Tooth Fairy, and imagining we could hear Santa's sleigh bells on Christmas Eve. Pretending, along with a gaggle of friends, that we were spies like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. And, laughing ourselves silly over things no one but us would find funny.
Siblings and childhood friends share the most enchanting years of our lives. Wide-eyed fantasy and imagination rule the day.
Although, we ride the merry-go-round only for a short time before crossing into reality. Once adulthood takes over, there's no turning back--more or less.
Deadlines, jobs, mortgages, dodging health issues, and the inevitable changes that come with raising children or caring for aging parents leave little room for daydreaming. Little room for imagination that filled younger days.
In recent days, I've barely had a chance to string together two consecutive thoughts. In addition to living with the world's most loquacious cat, I'm, how shall I put it, the current curator of muv's daily verbalization quota.
I remember while working on my degree in environmental horticulture, students were assigned to work in the greenhouse potting plants and watering seedlings. I don't mind occasional time out for what I call mindless work and welcome the chance to take a mental recess.
Thankfully, during reality recess with former childhood friends, we feel playful, eager for laughter, and ready to pretend we are young again.
"Susan, remember the time when we floated our VW into the ocean...haha!" Once upon a time.
