Sticking Together
Sticking together...
"A snowflake is one of God's most fragile creations, but look what they can do when they stick together." Author Unknown
While my mother is recovering from knee replacement surgery, we are getting out and slowly about. She repeatedly tells me to go ahead without her; she thinks she is too slow and feels bad about holding me back. Of course, she is moving at a slow pace, and that's alright. Unless there is a fire.
So, we walk together at a slow pace. Shopping takes longer, everything takes longer. It's what we do. Doesn't the nature of being together require making adjustments? Mom tries to walk a little faster; I concentrate on slowing the pace. We meet in the middle.
Apparently, as children, a few of my cousins and I decided to head out together for a bike ride. According to one of my favorite cousins, I was already halfway around the block before the others were on their bikes. I have no recollection of the bike outing, but I vaguely recall another episode in which my sister and I were pretending to be a horse and buggy. I was the horse; she was the buggy. She tightly held the reins around my waist. Problem was, I took off before she was ready. It didn't end well. Pattern of behavior? Miranda Priestly's words frequent my thoughts, "By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me."
The horse and buggy episode helps remind me of the importance of slowing down and sticking together, although there are many moments when I lose sight of this life lesson. Working through Mom's recovery is a good reminder.
Individuality and flying solo have merit, yet "...look what they can do when they stick together."
