Vermont

The autumn tree tunnel in Vermont, a majestic tunnel of Live Oaks in the deep south, the tunnel by the viaduct in Xenia, Ohio. What is it about a tunnel that's so alluring? The light at the end? I'm from the free-range generation. "Mom! I'm going outside." Off we tooled, up the street, around the block--on foot, riding bikes, climbing trees. There was a tunnel of vines that covered the huge stones leading from the bridge down to the railroad tracks. Yes, I ventured, never all the way down. Just far enough. Far enough to be enveloped in the cool green vegetation on a hot summer day. ~LowTide explorer, Carolyn Fjeran
