Lawn Guy

August 26, 2017

Do you enjoy the sound of a lawn mower?
I hear my 'lawn guy' in the backyard this morning and realize I like the hum and whirr of the mower--it reminds me of summer days, especially summer days of childhood. Summer break from school was longer when I was growing up. We didn't return to school until after Labor Day. In the Midwest when lawn mowers fell silent, it signaled the end of summer.
Back in the day, dads, granddads, and uncles were pushing the mowers. Pushing, not riding. I remember my grandfather's powerless push mower. Summer and family--that's what I'm talking about.
I've taken my turn behind the mower. It's not a bad thing mindlessly strolling about the landscape with instant gratification from a job well done. And the smell of fresh cut grass!
"When I go into my garden with a spade and dig a bed, I feel such an exhilaration and health that I discover that I have been defrauding myself all this time in letting others do for me what I should have done with my own hands." Ralph Waldo Emerson
